3 Essential Health Tools

+ RAW HONEYThanks to our friendly buddies the bee’s we have been blessed with an amazing tool to maintain healthy living.

Honey contains bits and pieces of pollen picked up by the bees as they fly from place to place. These are minute amounts of the very things that our bodies build up allergies to. So, by taking a tablespoon a day of this local honey, you are helping your body build up immunity to the allergens. Take it raw as a sweet treat, or add it to a cup of tea or your morning coffee. Try it, it works!
  • Scratchy throat - We’ve all experienced the discomfort and annoyance of a scratchy throat. Whether you’re dealing with a full blown infection, or just the aftermath of sinus sensitivity, honey provides a protective layer in the mucus membranes. Tea’s make a great buddy during the winter months and the best throat cure is “Throat Coat” tea which is made my a few different brands. Here are a few that work:
  • Minor cough - Try this recipe: Boil water on the stove as if you were making a regular cup of tea (about 6 to 8 ounces). Fill your favorite mug with two tablespoons of local honey and the juice of half of a fresh lemon. Pour in your water, stirring until the honey is completely dissolved and then top with some fresh mint (or a couple drops of mint extract from your local health food store). Blend again.
  • Instant Energy and Immune Support - The best way to BEAT the winter health blues is to avoid getting sick. Boosting the immune system naturally is a good way to start. Two of the best things for the immune system are Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar. They both provide antioxidants, amino acids, natural antibiotics, vitamins, trace minerals, anti-viral properties and more. Just as with honey, apple cider vinegar is best in its RAW form, so don’t be fooled into thinking the over processed stuff you’ll find in your local supermarket is going to do the trick; this is one time when going organic is essential.
  • To make your daily immune booster: fill a small drinking glass with ice-cold apple juice. Add one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and one tablespoon of honey. Don’t worry, the vinegar shouldn’t be too overpowering when mixed with the sweet juice and the honey. What you end up with is apple juice with a pleasant zing to it, much like apple cider.

+ OLIVE LEAF  - Olive leaf extract is extracted from the leaves of the Olive tree and has numerous health benefits.
  • Immune System - As prevention is usually better than cure and you want to have a winter without the problems of colds and flu, then you should consider investing in some olive leaf extract capsules, which, if you start taking now, may be very beneficial over the coming months. If you have a cold or flu, then the symptoms will be relieved more quickly if you take olive leaf extract.
  • Heart and Cholesterol - Olive leaf extract will help in lowering cholesterol levels and reducing blood pressure, because of its antioxidant properties. The bad cholesterol in the body is the Low density Lipoprotein. When the level of LDL is lowered the condition of the heart improves. Olive Leaf Extract is recommended for the high blood pressure patients. It reduces blood pressure by relaxing the arteries. Blood flow is increased and as a result the functioning of the heart recovers.
  • Stomach - It can prevent excess acidity in the stomach and cure gastritis. It also relieves stomach pain by stopping muscle spasms in the stomach and is useful in the treatment of stomach cramps.
  • Skin - Olive leaf extract is also very good for the skin. It can eliminate acne problems and also prevents wrinkle formation. It keeps the skin young and supple. If you are tired of your acne problem then Olive leaf extract can do wonders for you. It cleanses the skin and eliminates acne forever. It will also give you a youthful and glowing skin.
  • Chronic Fatigue - It reduces chronic fatigue in the body and revitalizes the body system so that you feel more energetic. The Olive Leaf extract is also a stress buster and improves your mental health as well. Chronic fatigue is a serious problem among many people. Basically the reason of this problem is the production of micro toxins in the body. Olive leaf extract inhibits the production and thus people feel more energetic and vigilant while performing their regular activities.

+ ELDERBERRYElderberry is one of the most common fruit-bearing shrubs of North America. It’s amazing healing properties have been used for years and years.
  • Time Tested - The ancient Egyptians discovered that applying elderberry flowers improved the complexion and healed burns. All parts of the elder have long enjoyed a strong medicinal reputation on their own merits, however, ONLY the berries and flowers are recommended for internal use today.
  • Vitamin C - In fact, elderberries contain more vitamin C than any other herb except for black currants and rosehips!
  • Remedies - In recent years dietary supplements and other natural health products containing extracts, juices or syrups of European elder have become popular in America as remedies for the treatment of cold and flu symptoms, marketed primarily through natural food stores alongside other popular herbal remedies used for treatment or prevention of upper respiratory tract infections and other symptoms associated with colds and flus.

Fall Into Health Lecture Notes

Tips to Stay Healthy During the Cold Season

·    Super nutrition equals super immunity.  Your body is already built to fight off germs and viruses.  The key is to eat well to feed your immune system.

·   Develop effective stress management practices.  People who are chronically stressed are more susceptible to infections.  Try deep breathing to keep you calm and grounded.

·   If you do get the cold or flu, make sure to get adequate rest, eat light meals mostly of vegetables, broths, fruit and drink sufficient amounts of water.

·    High body temperature is one way the body fights off infection.  There is no urgent need to reduce fever unless over 102°.

·    Everyone does not need the flu shot.  Check with your doctor to determine what is best for you.

BTHW Water Bottle and Tote!

The Institute of Medicine advises that men consume roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day and women consume 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.

The Growing concern about plastic-reusable bottles has sparked a big demand for other options. Aluminum bottles have grown in popularity as more people demand BPA free choices for reusable bottles. The BT Heath and Wellness supports this cause and you can too!

Have you ever gone to the grocery store and gotten a plastic bag and it ripped? You throw it away, right?? Well, guess what? That same plastic bag can take up to 400 years to disintegrate! That's not making the problem any better. It's making it worse. Plastic bags are bad for the environment. Have you tried using a Tote Bags instead??

Sure, there are some good things about plastic bags. Like how for example, some people recycle their plastic bags. Some people reuse them.

Help support our environment and BT Health and Wellness find out how you can get your water bottle and tote today!

Why WATER???

Drinking water is vital to your health. Just by drinking a healthy amount of water you gain tremendous health benefits, and sometimes you can even throw away your migraine medicine or pain killer.

Here is the %:
  1. Brain consists of 90% of water
  2. Bone consists of 22% of water
  3. Blood consists of 83% water
  4. Muscle consists of 75% water

The functions of water in human body are vital. The water:
  1. Transports nutrients and oxygen into cells
  2. Moisturizes the air in lungs
  3. Helps with metabolism
  4. Protects our vital organ
  5. Helps our organs to absorb nutrients better
  6. Regulates body temperature
  7. Detoxifies
  8. Protects and moisturizes our joints

Harmful Effects and Symptoms of Dehydration
  1. Migraine
  2. Tiredness
  3. Constipation
  4. Muscle cramps
  5. Irregular blood pressure
  6. Kidney problems
  7. Dry skin
  8. 20% dehydrated – Risk of death

Symptoms of Dehydration
  1. Dark Urine Dark Yellow or Orange in Color: Urine is generally pale yellow to clear when you have sufficient water intake. Dark color or strong smell indicates that you need to drink more water.
  2. Thirst – Thirst is the most obvious sign that you're already dehydrated. It is always a good practice to drink more water when your are not thirsty, don’t wait until you're thirsty.
  3. Hunger – Most people mistake hunger for the indication to eat more, whereas in actual fact, they may be dehydrated. So before you have your meal, grab a glass of water.
  4. Fatigue – Water is a source of energy and gives you a boost in energy.  If you find yourself sloth-like all the time it may be due to lack of water.
  5. Headaches One of the first signs of dehydration is an “achy” pain that starts behind your eyebrows and can move all over your forehead and even eventually, in the late stages, to the base of your scalp.
Dry Skin - Skin is the largest body organ and requires its share of water.

How Much Water Should You Drink???
The true amount of water you should drink depends upon several factors, including your gender, age, level of activity, and environment. These numbers are determined by the average amount of water a person will lose throughout the day through excretions, as well as the amount of water required to facilitate bodily functions.

Gender:
Doctors are now recommending:
  - A healthy adult man should drink approximately 13 cups of water per day.
 - A healthy adult woman should drink approximately nine cups per day.
 - Women who are nursing or pregnant will need to drink at least 10 to 13 cups of water per day to accommodate for the additional water loss to the baby or fetus.

Spring Into Summer

Get SUN-SENSE.
• The sun is not our enemy. We were made for sunshine. But exercise good sun-sense by only staying in the sun for specified amounts of time, based on your skin tone, without sun protection.

• Sunscreen/Sunblock. Must have UVA and UVB protection. Use sunscreens that do not contain toxic chemicals.

•To determine if your sunscreen is toxic go to this web site: http://breakingnews.ewg.org/2011sunscreen/

• The sunshine vitamin. Vitamin D affects 2,000 - 3,000 cells in our bodies. It helps improve our moods, increases energy, calcium absorption, prevent cancer and promotes better sleep.

Summer Food.
•In the heat of summer, nature gives us exactly what we need to eat to stay healthy and cool. Eat an abundance of greens, fruits and limited amounts of heavy animal protein.

• Grilling. Limit exposure to toxins from grilling by marinating meat and not over cooking food or charring food.

Mosquitoes.
• Stay away from all anti-repellants with DEET. It’s toxic.

REMEMBER: Have FUN! Summer is a great time for relaxation. Enjoy the beauty of taking time to relax and un-wind. It will do wonders for you - mind, body and soul.

Fall Asleep Naturally

Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to sleep. Tossing and turning. Your mind is racing, going over everything that happened today. Night noises keep you awake. What can you do? There ARE things you can do! Read on and learn some new tricks to sleep well. These tips are also known as "Sleep Hygiene."

Sleep only when sleepy.

This reduces the time you are awake in bed.

If you can't fall asleep within 20 minutes, get up and do something boring until you feel sleepy.

Sit quietly in the dark or read the warranty on your refrigerator. Don't expose yourself to bright light while you are up. The light gives cues to your brain that it is time to wake up.

Don't take naps.
This will ensure you are tired at bedtime. If you just can't make it through the day without a nap, sleep less than one hour, before 3 pm.

•Refrain from exercise at least 4 hours before bedtime.
Regular exercise is recommended to help you sleep well, but the timing of the workout is important. Exercising in the morning or early afternoon will not interfere with sleep.

•Develop sleep rituals.
It is important to give your body cues that it is time to slow down and sleep. Listen to relaxing music, read something soothing for 15 minutes, have a cup of caffeine free tea, do relaxation exercises.

•Only use your bed for sleeping.

Refrain from using your bed to watch TV, pay bills, do work or reading. So when you go to bed your body knows it is time to sleep. Sex is the only exception.

•Stay away from caffeine, nicotine and alcohol at least 4-6 hours before bed.

Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants that interfere with your ability to fall asleep. Coffee, tea, cola, cocoa, chocolate and some prescription and non-prescription drugs contain caffeine. Cigarettes and some drugs contain nicotine. Alcohol may seem to help you sleep in the beginning as it slows brain activity, but you will end end up having fragmented sleep.

•Take a hot bath 90 minutes before bedtime.
A hot bath will raise your body temperature, but it is the drop in body temperature that may leave you feeling sleepy. Read about the study done on body temperature below.

•Make sure your bed and bedroom are quiet and comfortable.
A hot room can be uncomfortable. A cooler room along with enough blankets to stay warm is recommended. If light in the early morning bothers you, get a blackout shade or wear a slumber mask. If noise bothers you, wear earplugs or get a "white noise" machine.

Use sunlight to set your biological clock .
As soon as you get up in the morning, go outside and turn your face to the sun for 15 minutes.

NATURAL SUPPLEMENTS:
Magnesium and Calcium -Magnesium and calcium are both sleep boosters, and when taken together, they become even more effective. Take 200 milligrams of magnesium—lower the dose if it causes diarrhea—and 600 milligrams of calcium each night.
Wild Lettuce - If you've suffered anxiety, headaches, or muscle or joint pain, you might already be familiar with Wild Lettuce. Take 30 to 120 milligrams before bed.
Aromatherapy - Find a spray with real lavender and spritz it on your pillow before bedtime. Or buy a lavender-filled pillow.
Melatonin -Melatonin is the hormone that controls sleep. Take 0.3 to 0.5 milligrams before bed.
L-Theanine -Try a brand called Suntheanine, which is pure L-theanine. (Other brands have inactive forms of theanine that block the effectiveness.) Take 50 to 200 milligrams at bedtime.
Valerian Root - Valerian is one of the most common sleep remedies for insomnia.
